Article Density

About Article Density

If you are a blogger, internet marketer or a webmaster, then you probably know the importance of writing quality content to improve your readership as well as rankings in search engines. The phrase “content is king” has been heard by a content writer or a webmaster at least a hundred times by now, but that’s cent percent true.

If you want to rank your website on Google, then you need to keep in mind the important on-page and off-page SEO techniques and not abuse them or else Google will slap you with a penalty and trust me, it will be hard to recover from it and your site will be presumed dead. One of the most important (and most abused) on-page SEO tactic is Keyword Density.

What is Keyword Density and how it is important for SEO?

In simple terms, keyword density is the percentage of the times a keyword appears within a context or a web page compared to the total number of words on that page. For on-page search engine optimization, keyword density is an important thing for webmasters to take care of. It is helpful in determining the relevancy of a particular page or post.

During the infancy of the search engines, keyword density was used as a major ranking factor where search engines used to rank content for the particular keyword which is optimized and present many times on the page. Since the bloggers and webmasters have figured it out and abused it a lot, now it is considered as a minor ranking factor in the eyes of Google and other factors such as loading time, user interface, navigation and some factors outside of the scope of the webmaster are given preference while ranking a website.

Experts recommend to have a keyword density anywhere in between 1 to 3 percent depending on the word count and it is always safe to disperse the keywords in the entire article and throw in some related keywords within the article to improve the semantic searches.

If you try to stuff keywords in 2016, then you will be penalized by panda algorithm for keyword stuffing.

If you are on WordPress, then you have to exercise caution since WordPress outside the box is a terrible keyword stuffer in the form of headings, breadcrumbs, sidebar links, related posts, recent posts etc. Suppose you publish an article with the target keyword “blue shirt” and name the title as best blue shirts for summer, then WordPress automatically shows the word “blue shirt” six times without you even including in your article.

Because of that reason, it is highly recommended to avoid using recent posts and related posts widget in the sidebar and use long titles to dilute the action of the keyword.
